A Gay Guide to Philadelphia: Celebrating Pride in the City of Brotherly Love

Philadelphia has a big gay scene to explore

Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, is one of the best cities in America for LGBTQ+ travelers. Known for its history of activism and Pride parades, Philly offers a welcoming atmosphere, highlighted by its bustling Gayborhood and inclusive events and businesses.

It's especially fun to visit during Pride Month in June, with its iconic march and festival. October's OURfest inspired by National Coming Out Day is another highlight, along with April's Black Pride celebrating local community strength. These events not only offer fun but also support local LGBTQ+-owned businesses and artists.

The Gayborhood, at the heart of LGBTQ+ Philadelphia, is draped in rainbow flags and found in the Washington Square West section of Philadelphia’s downtown. Visitors can discover local history through the Beyond the Bell Tours’ historical walking tour, which illuminates key LGBTQ+ sites and stories. This area also boasts significant murals like 'Pride and Progress' by Ann Northrup and 'Finally on 13th' by Nile Livingston.

Dining in the Gayborhood offers a taste of the community’s diversity, with spots like Barbuzzo and Mission Taqueria serving delightful dishes. The area’s unique shops, like Open House and Verde, are also must-visit destinations. For dessert, Fishtown’s Cake Life Bake Shop provides pastries in a trans-owned venue that celebrates quality and inclusivity.

You can also go on day trips to Washington DC and New York - both are easily accessible by train. Other daytrip highlights include a tour of Lancaster County where the Amish community live which you can take through a local tour company, WeVenture.

Philadelphia not only offers a variety of gay-friendly activities but also a strong sense of community and acceptance, making it a must-visit destination for LGBTQ+ travelers.
