“Showers don't work, carpet just outside shower is damp and sticky, the odour upstairs is unbearable, again upstairs the occasional cleaning is done by staff member that is working at the café which is very unhygienic.

The owner should really be ashamed of himself for letting this place get the way it is. Charging the fee and not investing it into better facilities is just shocking.

If you decide you still want to go take my tip and take your own towel, pair of flip flops and antiseptic of some sort. I would give it zero stars if I could.“

  2. A good visit

“I hadn't been in this sauna for a good number of years and the very mixed comments on this site put me off going back.

However, I decided to check it out for myself, as I know that there are always idiots who post hateful tripe simply because they are unhappy. (Ugly inside as well as outside).

I am in my 60s, not too bad looking for my age but, everyone thinks that, no matter how frightful they look.

I arrived around 2.00 pm. The prices were better than expected, £8 for a locker and £15 for a private cabin. (Various discounts for students etc). I decided on a cabin. It was spotlessly clean, very comfortable, a full-sized locker with key, condoms, lub, a small mirror, a television showing quite good porn and a lock on the door. Perfect really.

All through this sauna there was a high standard of cleanliness, the showers were a bit too hot. The steam room was hot, the sauna (nothing wrong with the design!) was also hot enough. There is an excellent café upstairs, the prices are reasonable and the cute guy serving there was very friendly.

There was a mixture of ages, I wasn't the oldest by a long chalk and, as far as I was concerned, there was someone for all tastes. Of course the handsome young muscle Mary's were strutting their stuff and I was WAY too old for them but they were really too young for me (or so I told myself!). Quite a lot of raunchy action on the top floor, it was good for a Saturday afternoon I thought. A few glory holes, all busy. I had my money's worth of the action.

By 7.00 pm I was thinking of heading off when a very cute little Californian guy passed the open door of my cabin and stopped for a look and fun. So, on the whole, it was a good visit and I will go back. I may try the other Edinburgh sauna, No.18, on a Saturday, just to compare, I'll leave feedback if I do.

I have been in gay saunas in Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Stockholm and various other cities, including London. Edinburgh cannot compete with the continental places but I am in Scotland at the moment, so Edinburgh or Glasgow are my only choices, take them or leave them but there is no need to bitch about this sauna, it is perfectly fine.

I suspect that the trolls who leave horrible comments here are the only gay's in their particular village, they probably go to bed with their socks on and wear their pyjamas under their clothes.“

  3. Visit for fun

“My main reason for visiting SW is for hardcore fun. There are normally a good mixture of guys. Muscle studs, young guys and very old men. I am always polite even when rebuffing guys. The staff are always friendly to me (infer from that whatever you will), the facilities are decent enough and the upstairs dungeon is perfect.“

“Not a review, a comment from a potential client, visiting Edinburgh in May: So many negative comments about facilities, staff, yet management posts a rely to only one positive review. Can all the others have been so wrong? "No running water" the biggest turnoff of all.“

  6. No running water

“Dirty, no running water. The mgmt should be ashamed to run such a dirty unsanitary place. For international customers like me, it is awful to see facilities like this run. Are they ever going to learn to run a clean, desirable place for guys. Come on Edinburgh, this is shame on you. Show respect and a sense of cleanliness for your clientele.“

  7. It's one of two in the city. Needs to try harder

“Reception staff first class. Lovely guy. Facilities grim. Showers abysmal. Steam room not working. Sauna badly designed. Upstairs area a total flop. Clientele the usual suspects. If I went again I would have to be drunk. No alcohol licence.“

  10. Just okay

“I went there during my stay in Edinburgh. The staff was friendly and helpful. Facilities are good and clean. But I must say the guys who go there are not what I would describe attractive or hot. Mainly senior people.“

  11. Why visit SW?

“I visit the sauna once a month and there is always fun to be had. It does help when you are VWE, mixed race and young. The staff are always friendly and the facilities are fine. I only use the shower downstairs as I find that there is more action upstairs and let's face it, why else would I visit?“

“@William15-09-2016 Just what do you define as VWE? What might seem small to you could be large & attractive to someone else! It's a well-known fact that the smaller a guy is when flacid the more he's going to gain when getting erect. So take that & stuff it in your craw!“

  12. Dirty, poor facilities

“If you like a dirty, smelly, badly maintained sauna then this is the place to go. Only 1 shower was working when I visited so I reported it to the guy on Reception and he shrugged his shoulders and said "nothing works here!"

    I'd definitely avoid it.“

“Steam room out of action today but still had to pay full price to get in :-( I would have expected a slight reduction in the entry price due to the lack of facilities......if I'd known the steam room wasn't working I'd have gone elsewhere“

  14. Good experience

“Visit to Steamworks went well, good variation of guys at start the team steamworks(regulars) closed ranks with regulars in evening so kept you out of the party but facillities were clean and was easy to find coming from rail station. Sauna was nice and steamroom was clean I had a cabin and for £7 was a very good deal. No wifi within building for personnel use but overall a good experiance would return again. Never used the coffee lounge but seemed in good order. Towels if and when you want them no limit when wet exchange not a lot of places to leave towel while using facilities but in my opinion towel would be for modesty and would prefer walking naked with no towel but all patrons were using them. I did as the romans would.“

  16. First impressions

“Visited here a few weeks ago when I had a free Saturday to myself . Had been recommended by a few friends as I do enjoy a visit to a sauna. Thought it was OK but nothing exciting and did notice the missing lock on one of the small rooms in the upstairs in the maize area - door kept shut by a towel. Was in the steam room most of the time by myself ( although busy ) but the sauna was hot hot hot ! Nobody lasted any time! Personally don't think I'll be back but glad I tried it out for myself.“

  17. Disappointing

“I used to love going to Steamworks but now find it unwelcoming especially one who lacks the personal touch needed in his role. Infrequent visitors are ignored as staff chat to friends. “

  18. Customer care?

“I'm unhappy with the poor level of customer care, shown at this sauna.
Especially the masseur. How he gets away with it, beggars belief.“

  19. Great place

“I travel to Edinburgh 2 to 3 times a year and on every visit I make sure I spend as much time at the Steamworks as I can. I have had some incredible experiences, all very good. I find the place to be clean and well maintained and the staff very friendly and helpful. I just loved it.

I look forward to my next visit in late March 2015 and can only dream of the fun time ahead.....“

  20. Steamworks Sauna

“It costs £15 for a supposedly luxury cabin and another £18 for a massage from a helpful masseur, and most of the customers and attendants are very nice civilized people. However, the proprietor steadfastly refuses to show duty of care to his customers, e.g.by neglecting repairs, by encouraging misfits to get high on the poppers he sells to them as room deodorants, and by allowing unsanitary things to happen in the Maze, some of which are cleaned up by the restaurant attendant in between cooking and serving the mediocre food. This general policy routinely leads to even self-protective customers getting into invidious, and even bizarre life threatening, situations.(e.g when a huge spaced out transvestite, high on poppers and whatever, suddenly collapses into the Jacuzzi with a mighty crash). Furthermore, the legalities of what is happening there are not fully explained to the largely well-meaning customers. Many of them do not, for example, understand that some of the things which happen in the sling room are not altogether legal. This sauna is not currently licensed, and customers face all sorts of potential risks, in particular in the medium to long term, by going there. Some of the customers are either ignorant about safe sex or nevertheless keen to indulge in unsafe sex as a turn on.“

    • My experience

“I have always enjoyed my visits to Steamworks Sauna.
There does appear to be a general lack of customer care training in respect to one staff member, Thankfully they have their hands covered in oil the majority of the time locked in a cupboard.
Unfortunately, when they decide to make a guest appearance in the communal areas, the superior condescending attitude towards the customers is released.
Please support this individual with customer care focus training. Ensuring they understand the consequences of there actions in the establishment they are employed in.
Five stars for all the staff except one, whom sadly gets a -5 stars.
